Hi all,

I bought an iAudio U2 around December of last year. The other day I was browsing the iAudio website and saw that the U2 now has a new chipset.

Anyone have more info about this? What are the differences between the two chipsets (better sound quality, etc)?

My understanding is that the original U2 used a Sigmatel chipset. An email to CowonAmerica yielded very little information.

thanks for your input

Unless things have changed without my knowing it, the G3, U2, and i5 all use the same chipset (a Sigmatel 3xxxx of some sort). The U3 uses a different chipset: the Telechips TCC770.

Specs are still the same for the U2 (so still STMP35xx inside). Only the U3 features different innards, with, among other things, a Cirrus Logic CS42L51 codec. It's supposed to be a bit hissy on sensitive cans/IEMs.

That's true. Even with my ER-4S there is an audible hiss.

If you go to the U2 section, look under the Features Tab and then the "Superior Technology and Support" heading. It says that "New chipset is installed and upgraded on the U2". Previously, it did not say this here.

If you look, you'll find it says "new chipset is installed..." on basically every product they sell. Besides, you can't take everything that iAudio says too seriously. Example:

Unfortunately my U3 is butt-ugly; I don't think I'll ever get to be a fashion leader.

The limit is like 650 files and 53 folders now. Other players with the same chipset are no better (e.g. Samsung YP-MT6*: ~500 files).

As for the "new chipset" thingy, the STMP35xx still *was* new when the U2 came out. (The iAudio 4 still used the STMP3410/20.) Since they aren't going to base a new player upon an old and outdated chipset, that kind of marketing blurb is fairly meaningless.
