I've heard that Rio is a dangerous place and many people on the Internet comment sections have been calling it a 3rd world country or some type of hell hole of some kind with many strong nasty insults.
I would still visit though despite the fears that are on the internet comment sections.
Why?
Because I was there two years ago on vacation and had a great time. Yes, there were some locals who warned me about being robbed when I flashed my wallet and camera but to be honest, I never felt scared and I even entered some bad areas where you could buy drugs and prostitutes. Did I feel threatened? Not at all.
I even met other tourists from Europe and they seemed to have a good time. Yes, you could get maybe robbed in Rio but I would still visit anyway. There's lots of normal friendly people there too.
