So I want to explore some new types of music, but I have no clue where to start.

I'm getting tired of my New Metal, Rock, and Alternative collection....I want music that isn't just noise, dosent have alot of lyrics, Has nice punchy clear beat, Something thats Not to calm but rather exciting to listen too.

The genres ive heard of:

Techno
Electronica
House
Trance

But what do they all mean, and how to they differ from eachother?

Here are a few tracks I like that I think are "Techno" ect (I really don't know what they are, lol)....Anyways this is all I really have for "Techno" and I really like the style of music. A very interesting change

So can anyone recommend some groups based on the songs I have listed? And Can someone explain all those different genres?

Thanks, I am clearly lost

mostly ambient techno/experimental techno/trip hop/drill'n'bass/IDM/fusion of sorts. i'd easily recommend any of the above.

edit: personally, i can't stand pure techno/trance.. the neverchanging beats/samples irritate me to no end.

Im a fan of Roni Size (especially his first two albums, "New Forms" and "In the Mode"), Infected Mushroom ("Coverting Vegetarians [disc 2]" and "I'm The Supervisor"), and DJ Food (I love "Kaleidoscope", it's not really the techno you are thinking of, but it is electronic).

As for definitions, i think Electronica is the big grand-daddy catagory that all electronicly made (computers, synths, etc) music falls into.

Techno is music designed for clubs, dancing and DJs. Its totally electronic and usually has some kind of funky or rock like feel.

House is more dance music, with that constant pulsing bassdrum beat that gives you headaches real quick. think of like, Basement Jaxx, and maybe Daft Punk.

and Trance is aimed at well, putting you in a trance. Is usually a neverchanging drum beat and simple melodies with synths looped a whole lot of times with ocassionaly variations. Usually trance fans describe it as dark and atmospheric. The idea is that you can zone out and go into a "trance." It just makes me bored, usually.

In my opinion there are too many genres (there are plenty more than 4) and a lot of the music overlaps into multiple genres. I like to think of electronica in terms of dance and non-dance. Im a fan of non-dance, since it's more for listening and i suck at dancing. the albums i recommended are nondance except for the second Infected Mushroom disc, but it has enough music and variety to keep me listening.

Well I think that's kind of what he was looking for.

Enigma, Tricky, Portishead, Bjork - crazy techno? I wouldn't think so.

I never could figure out the difference between all the different genres either. IMHO, the best techno came out in the early to mid 90's. If you want some recommendations, try early Moby, or Messiah, or better yet, pick up some techno compilations from that time period.

actually, from the tone of his post it seems like he doesn't exactly know what style he's looking for.. or wants to explore all branches of electronica.

so i posted with the broad scope of electronica in mind.

woow, yeah.. that's great.

my personal tastes are down in the jungle->ambient techno->idm/glitch/experimental breakbeat stuff.
