I understand all the costly upgrades...I understand the constant changing stacks. I "get" it.

When I first joined here I was looking for amp advice for the new e4cs coming in the mail. Prior to that I just browsed...thats how I got the suggestion for the e3s and the e4s. I was thrilled when I got the e3cs and preordered the e4cs and recived them right when they released. I was thrilled with those, but needed an amp. I am now happy with the e4cs, the cmoy, and the ipod mini (although I am secretly eying a new amp and source, shhh dont tell the BF)

But something was missing. I had no stack. I was fine with this at first, but then looking at all the purdy pictures made me want one. I found an old receiver in our garage, a really nice Pioneer, but it is broken. Thanks to the help of folks here I found where I could get it fixed, but it was out of my budget at the time (and still is) so thats a project for later. I asked for a vintage receiver for Christmas and got one, a Kenwood KR-750. I hooked up the old Pioneer turntable (PL-518) and the new dvd player I bought today as a source (the ultra cheap Magnavox MWD 200F) plugged in the SR-80s...and the result?

Disappontment...it doesnt sound any better then the ipod, and doesnt sound at all like what I was expecting. Guess I have to start all over now

Look what you people have done to me! I am an even broker version of my previous self!

Edit:Oh Jeez...I had the "mono" button down on the receiver...sounds much better now. Im gonna go hide under a table.

Dont sweat it - those older recievers aren't that inuitive. For instance, my Marantz 2226 has a mono button too, and a loudness button, and two different speaker buttons (try playing speakers with those buttons unpushed, it wont work hehe), and a FM -25hz cut filter button, etc etc.

You have to fiddle with it a bit. And don't forget to plug your dvd player into various different inputs and move the selector switch to that input. Some RCA plugs might give you a cleaner signal for some reason. On my Marantz, the "Aux" channel is the best, and I keep my selector switch on there unless it's vinyl or radio time.

Yea..its got alot of weird buttons on it. One is a subsonic filter (I have no clue what the hell that is, doesnt seem to change the sound at all). It took me like 10 minutes worth of fiddling to figure out how to turn off the fm. Finally I pressed AM+FM and off it went. Lack of instruction manuals kinda sucks, but this is a sexy peice of gear. Watts per channel could be better though, my best research puts it at around 60. I really wanted some Onix Rockets too...oh well. Guess I will need a new amp for those

BTW Jahn, my boyfreind and I read your whole thread 3 months ago together. He looked at me and said "If you ever get that much gear you know I am leaving right?" and I said "Honey if I had that much gear what would I need you for?"

Ah good times.

Good call on the watts - luckily my Wharfedales are pretty efficient so this old tank of a receiver has no issues pushing it. When it's time for your speaker upgrade definitely make certain your gear can get your speakers up and running to the right amount of db.

Btw, the Curse has expanded a lot in 3 months, I think it's time for a recap in insanity...
