ya, creative has a much larger advertising budget than apple (they're have one around 300 mill) but i've yet to see a tv ad, bilboard, or poster. it really is weird, they might be holding off for all of the zen micro accessories to get out there or something else.

Well of course advertising is part of it. But I believe Creative, Iriver etc. shouldn't start advertising more and more. Eventually those who are looking for the better products will find them.
What they should learn is to listen to customer feedback and really DO something about all the remaining problems. If they would only browse head-fi <sigh> and listen to our idea's an almost perfect player would be on the market already.

As much as I want to agree with you, I can't. Advertising makes a huge difference. When people think about a type of product, the familiar ones pop into their mind, and those are the ones they are most likely going to buy. If they really care about researching and making the best decision, they have to take that next step. However, most people don't. The 22,000 members of head-fi are "those who are looking for better products," but do you think the 2.4 million people who bought ipods 4th quarter of 2004 were also? Basically, the informed customer makes the better choice, but he is by far the exception. Recent election results show this exactly. If only the average consumer was a head-fier...

As far as the Zen Micro goes, it is pretty well advertized. I've seen a few billboards, and it's been in plenty of magazines featuring a full-page ad. And of course there are those God-awful iRiver ads for their PMPs with Jenna Jameson... ugh.

It is also my understanding that iRiver advertises heavily in South Korea, the place where they are from.

I don't think you quite understood what that page is.
That is a collection of some of their published TV ads.

Given the brand of humor and the accents, those Creative ads were probably aired on Australian and/or British TV. Creative's biggest market, though, is the US so they should seriously consider some television presence in the US. I wonder why they didn't try a Super Bowl ad?

Maybe much of that $100 million ad budget is going into the personal pockets of their chairman, who is being "paid" to make hyperbolic, attention-grabbing statements to the press, such as saying the shuffle is a POS and that Creative was on track to sell 4-5 million MP3 players in the last quarter (they sold 2 million).

Got to wonder what you ARE paying for though, as the iRivers are among the most expensive on the market, gigabyte for gigabyte. At least with the iPod the advertising dollars are very visible.
