Just a fun exercise, I showed two of my non-audio friends (software engineers) a picture of tube amplifier and asked them what they thought it was. Here is the picture:
Without the text of course! Both of them said coffee machine.
When I asked what those tubes are for, one guy said "not sure, looks like some air purifying mechanism".
So ya there it is.. Outside of audiophile community, nobody knows or care
Why would people outside the community care about things that are important/relevant inside the community? Not even all audiophiles have interest in tube amps (but at least they tell them apart from coffee makers).
As a mildly autistic and eccentric (very introverted) person I have lived all my life feeling other people are just different. It is not common for me to feel like being inside a community. Most of the time other people do not care about the same things I do and I don't care about a lot of things other people care about. For me it is very easy to understand why people don't know tube amps.
I have a friend who is big into espresso. When talking about our hobbies we end up drawing a lots of parallels between them in terms of getting the perfect cup or the perfect sound. The type of bean, how fine you grind the beans, how long you pull the cup, the angle you hold the wand, etc. I constantly joke that he is just "EQing" his coffee to match peoples preferences!

They were superceeded about 60 years ago, before that they were ubiquitous but you’ve got to be well into retirement to remember those days. I wonder how many millennials have seen a carburettor? How many would have any idea what a slide rule is, a wax cylinder or even a VHS tape? Once a technology is superseded it’s gone and forgotten within a generation, unless you can find a niche market willing to pay a serious premium for nostalgia or false marketing!
This. The same goes for watches, cars, sports gear, fashion, rifles, keyboards, TVs, cameras, animals, ... The list just goes on and on. Why would or should anyone care for something that has no relevance to them.
