I'll try explain myself as clearly as possible.

I've had these HD 599s for just over a year now and I love them. I also bought the Sennheiser GSX 1000 AMP for the 7.1 sound because my old pair of headphones came with a 7.1 dolby adapter so I was used to the sound when gaming.

However recently I've been thinking to myself I always hear and read posts about people saying how fake 7.1 is and it just makes me wonder.
Why am I using this perhaps I need a changed and get used to what is 'normal'.

My question is how can I get the best out of my HD 599s?

Gaming + Music.

Thanks.

Not sure if i understand your question. Depending on your source you can always get an amp. Yes 7.1 is not great, i have the kingston hyper x cloud 2's for the odd time i game and i usually always turn the 7.1 off. They make the headphones bright sounding and make the ambient noise (wind, leaves rusting) annoying and more forward...at least in the witcher 3. Primarily, i use my 400i's for music and for gaming unless im playing forza on windows 10 in which case the mic on the kingston hyper x comes in handy. I had a pair of the 598's which i thought sound pretty much the same as your 599's and i thought they were great by themselves out of the objective 2 amp and either a soundcard or usb dac. They were great for gaming and i found they excelled well at classical music which i dont listen to all the time. Other than for gaming and classical the soundstage was so large it was not realistic for other genres and the grain in the top end grew old quickly for some genres. Given the choice i would probably buy them again for $100 for their soundstage but the resolution just wasnt that great. They are not bad headphones but i have so many other pairs... I sold them for the 400is which have a more intimate soundstage and not as dark sounding which worked better for Metalcore and heavy metal, Jazz, tenor opera...yeah im a weird guy lol.

Best as improved surround sound for FPS gaming or improved sound quality?

For FPS gaming, maybe buy this used Sound Blaster Z, see it it offers better headphone surround sound, for FPS gaming.

I'm guessing improving audio quality would mean buying headphones that cost way more then what the HD559 costed you.

Hes got the 599s which i think are a refresh of the 598s...i think the 559s are the entry level model. They are decent for both gaming and music with a very engaging soundstage. An objective 2 would help brighten them up a little, first you need a half decent dac though.

+1 on the soundblaster though, that would be the cheaper route than seperate amp/dac.
