How to find new releases

Apr 19, 2009 at 1:38 PM Post #16 of 22
I think this is a big problem for me. I miss new releases I would be interested in constantly, so I'm interested in any really good solutions that come of this. I subscribe to artist emails, which is an inelegant solution to the problem of getting information about new releases for dozens of artists I might be interested in. I bet Amazon, etc. have a way of setting up email alerts for new products released by so-and-so. That might be a better solution. I vaguely recall Rolling Stone Online doing this many years ago, as well.

That is definitely not true. Did you consider that maybe they just didn't like Oasis? I hated it. Does that mean that I hate music if it comes out of the UK?

In fact, I would say that a very large percentage of their positive reviews are about international bands. Take a look at the montreal music scene, like Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, Besnard Lakes, Malajube... "funeral" got the highest score they have given out in the las 3-4 years.

Pitchfork: Tool: Lateralus

Wow, this guy has pretentiousness down to a science. I'm actually not sure if the author even bothered to listen to the album, or if he just decided that he knew everything there was to know about the band after meeting a Tool fan at the mall. I could handle the 1.9 score if it was actually an indication of the writer's opinion of the music and not just an indictment against the band's fans. In fact, the only information offered in that review is that the author considers enjoyment of music to be secondary to how "hip" you will appear by listening to any particular band.

I think ragging on Pitchfork may be as old as Pitchfork itself.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. It takes all kinds to make the world interesting.

For snooty review fans, I think :: Home | Cokemachineglow.com does PM one better. My daily checker PopMatters has a slightly more populist slant. For the U.S. Billboard - Music News Magazine for Fans and Music Executives - Music Search has a comprehensive release list every week, albeit it with no reviews.
