Hi folks. I'm thinking of buying a used LCD-X, but I do not know what they are supposed to sound like. Given their price, I'm a bit worried about getting a dud, and they will be out if warranty, no receipt.

What should I look out for when I inspect them, to ensure I get a decent pair?

I always check for any cracks that might indicate a fall. An online test tone generator can give you some idea of channel balance. A multimeter on the cable end can check for ohm rating to make sure they're within 5 percent of each other.
Other than that, test listen to songs and listen for any static or vibration.

Another good idea is to really inspect the mesh in the cup in front of the driver. For planars specifically I once had a really tiny hair stuck in the mesh that was very lightly touching the driver causing weird buzzing for certain frequencies. I thought the driver was bad but once I removed the debris everything was perfect.

Which version are you looking for? I would start there. The latest revision made them less dependent on EQ (although I still think that EQ is required to get the most out of them). After that, I would look at the status of the pads and stability of all the moving parts on the headphone. Some of the older ones can generate a squeal/hiss out of an earcup that goes away if you gently tap it. I would try to avoid that if possible.
