I would replace my MRA-1a with the new Sony WH-1000XM2s if the sound quality is overall much better. Also, the noise-cancelling may help for productivity while I listen to music. Is that a thing? I never had experience with noise cancelling headphones.

what I love about the mdr-1a is the fit and feel while wearing, it's very light and can be worn for hours. How does the 1000xm2 compare in that regard?

Thanks

I cannot comment directly regarding comparing the two models but I suspect you may find the 1000xm2 to be less comfortable. It took me a good two weeks to get used to them (or they possibly simply softened up with use).

I still don't think they're the most comfortable headphones on the market for really long listening sessions though.

Hi Rgr555,

If possible, always demo.

Unfortunately, can't comment much on the MRA-1a as I don't own one but have used them before in the past long enough to agree with you on wearibility for hours though that was a long time ago so exact details may be fuzzy.

I have tried many noise cancelling headphones over the years, WH 1000X M2 are perhaps the best one I've come across so far, enough to actually own it.

Honestly, I'm not sure why Peddler has a problem with the comfort on the 1000X M2 as the moment I put it on I found it instantly comfortable & it is my second most frequently worn headphone at home, especially since I can move around the house with it no problem.

In other words, LONG LISTENING SESSIONS ARE NO PROBLEM.

Demo with good quality sources.

Hope this helps.

I have both - they sound more similar than different and I wouldn't say they are night and day difference. The 1000XMk2 however is just a newer and more refined headphone with the latest tech and driver units, also the 1000XMk2 is much more comfortable as the pads are thicker giving to a deeper cup than the 1A. What the 1A has over the 1000XMk2 is being balance capable as well as folding into a flatter package, with most DAPs now focusing on the quality of the balance output much more than the single end, this can be a deal breaker for some people.

If you don't need to go balance, or even what to go the other direction ie wireless, then you can't go wrong with the 1000XMk2, as it's hands down one of the best NC wireless headphones out there. And I agree with PaganDL regarding Peddler's issue of comfort, the 1000XMk2 are indeed very comfortable.

The Sony's have definitely become more comfortable over time but are still not as comfortable as the Sennheiser HD598sr.

Not exactly an apples to orange comparison though, as you are comparing a full size open headphone for stationary use with portable closed back headphones which folds and collapses.

I own both. The 1a is significantly more comfortable and lighter. The 1000x mk2 sound better with a more balanced sound. The 1a is too bloated in the bass. However, you may want to wait for the new version of the 1a, which is due soon.

I own both. I have 1a for over a year and use it daily in the office and now I upgraded my old bluetooth headphones to MDR 1000xm2. It's been only a week so some burn in may change the sound a little but this is what my feelings are about the both. 1a sounds very pleasant, with deep but not overpowering bass clear but not over the top high and well controlled mids. It is extremely light and comfortable to wear. Sometimes I wish that all my audio (in the car and at home) sounded like 1a. It's certainly one of if not the best (IMHO) sounding headphones I tried. Now to the 1000xm2- on flat (in headphones app) settings- it sounds really well controlled. The bass is not as mellow as 1a, but still present, probably a tad firmer. The mids are really good and well controlled, the highs are well defined but do not hurt your ears like some other headsets. The ANC is amazing and does a great job canceling most of the noise. I can hardly hear my keyboard clicking when I type. Maybe with some playing around and burn in I could get the sound close to 1a, but I think the sound profile is a bit different- more precise and flatter a bit closer to what you would expect from monitor headphones. So in my personal taste 1a sounds more pleasant and I will continue using it in the office and at home where being plugged in and having no ANC is not an issue. For town, train, plane etc 1000xm2 is really good, and if I had to chose one I would probably go for 1000xm2 due to versatility. It is not as light and slightly less comfy, but those are small trade offs for great bluetooth connectivity, long battery life and amazing ANC coupled with great precise sound. So all in all, if you already own the 1a, I am not sure it would actually be an upgrade if you replaced 1a with 1000xm2, those a quite different headphones serving their purposes very well.
