Went on another thrift store haul today and ended up with three pairs of headphones, €3 each, all with broken cables. A pair of Steelseries Siberia V2 that have had the cable replaced, but the new one is very worn and ugly. Still works, tho.Okay headphones, a little cold sounding for my taste but good for CS:GO, I guess. Also found a pair of Sony MDR-570LPs. Broken connector, replaced it and also got those working. Don't need them so I gave them to my mate and he really likes them. Third pair are AKG K404s. I really like these as I'm a big fan of the AKG house sound and I need a pair of portable headphones to replace my current portables which are Sennheiser PCX 150 and they're pretty horrible and power hungry.
K404 cables are broken near the cups. I figured i could cut them shorter and re-solder them. They'd be a tad shorter but that ain't no problem :)
Now I just can't figure out how to open them. Do I need to use a hair dryer like people do with Grados? They look like they might be glued together.

Okay never mind, I cut out the broken part and directly soldered the cable ends together and heatshrinked them. Works great!

I did some listening and as I can't seem to find a review online for these I thought I'd write my impressions of them here and maybe someone looking to buy these might come across this thread.
I find the sound of these cans to pretty damn decent for their price. For their size they have deep and punchy, yet fairly well controlled bass. Mids are clean and nicely detailed, although slightly forward, giving these cans a somewhat warm sound signature. Highs are detailed but slightly laid back. Definitely not muffed or dead, but just not very crisp. Instrument separation and detail is decent on simpler songs, more complex passages are a challenge, tho. Overall sound is fast and energetic, yet easy to listen to. I do think that on certain tracks the bass can overtake some of the lower midrange, blending instruments such as drums a little bit too much into one.
Build quality is typical for a product in this price range. Sure, it won't fall apart in your hands, but the overall feel is quite plasticky. Metal headband is a nice touch, and earcup backs are made of nicer plastic, but the hinges feel somewhat flimsy. They don't feel like they'd wear out but they might break if you bend them too much. These cans are also foldable and fit nicely in bigger pockets.
Comfort wise they're quite good. They're light and sit comfortably on the head. Some people might find the headband pressing a bit too hard, but it really doesn't feel too bad even after prolonged listening. I do find it a bit annoying that when you take them off, the headband adjusters pull the headband tighter on their own, meaning you have to readjust them often after taking them off for even a moment.
Overall they sound excellent for their price and are quite portable. There are a few flaws as you'd expect from a set of cans this cheap but if you can get them for a decent price, I'd say go for it. Really not bad cans at all.
