hi,
i was looking around for something new to play with and came across a DAT walkman. i was wondering how the sound quality of DAT tapes sound compared to Minidisc. if it's an improvement i'll probaly purchase one. any input would be welcome.

DAT should be an improvement, it's not compressed...basically your going to have cd copies of your music on tape. Although, you better understand that DAT's need a lot of love and care. DAT's are great for recording live concerts though, so if your ever going to follow that hobby, go for it, expect to spend several hundred dollars on a DAT portable.

i'm not going to use it for live recordings. just for portable listening. Gloco, you're saying that DAT tapes are pretty fragile? that's definitely not for me, as i'm to throwing md's in and out my bag.

Not so much the tapes, but the unit itself needs a lot of cleaning and maintenance. If your not up to the task, i would vote avoid DAT.
