Ok, heres the deal. I recently recieved a Little Loaner from headroom. I've been listening to it a lot.

With my previous amp, a stock cmoy I built, I couldn't tell the difference between cds and mp3s. Yup!

So, today I popped in an mp3 cd into my denon. Wow! Totally different! The music seems VERY compressed, the highs stink, and the bass is boomy. Now, I borrowed the discs from my sister, who, lets say, "follows the kids at school" with her music tastes.

So, why can I now tell the difference?

Don't trust any impression of relative quality gained from an MP3 that you didn't encode yourself. Do it with LAME and then see if you can hear the difference. The MP3s I've grabbed from Audiogalaxy suck. The ones I have produced myself are good enough, and for portable use, I can't tell the difference. When sitting down with the big amp and the K1000s, then yes, the CD23 sounds better than the iPod.
