The other day I pulled my IHP120 out of my pocked and it accidentally dropped on the floor. It was in its case and at first it didn’t seem to have any effect, but 15 minutes later while I was using it the sound cut off. I looked the screen and all it would say is disconnected from USB, check HDD connection. It will not even turn on or off anymore. I tried resetting it and it still did the same thing. I’m wondering if there is any way to fix this or if my hard drive is completely screwed? I have a warranty so I can send it in if necessary, but I would rather not be without it for a few weeks if possible. Thanks for the help in advance.

This is a problem with the way the player is designed. i did the exact same thing to mine. The first thing you should try is to grab the player on the on both sides near the bottom wear the reset switch an apply pressure and try to start it up, if that works then your player can be fixed (well sorta).

I show you what I did.

See that orange rubber peice , it is applying pressure to the ATA daughter board instide the player. Most likely what happened is that a pin on one of the controller chips on that daughter board brole free of its solder. The pressure will force the chip back on its contacts and usaully solves the problem.

If that does not work then you may have screwed you HDD, and it thats the case then you can find replacements on ebay for fair prices.

*edit: I forgot to mention that my player will sometimes give me the check HDD connection randomly (maybe 1 in 20 startups) but I just keep a mechanical pencil or a paper clip with me an reset it and it boots up fine after 1 or 2 resests. I hope this fixes you problem.

Hmm, I tried squeezing the case and it didn’t make a difference. I don’t really have the tools with me at school to open it up and look inside, and am not sure it would be worth it if it voids my warranty. Its looking like I’m going to have to send it in. Thanks for the help and the quick reply Heckoman.

Fom what I have heard, it will take you forever to get a hold of iRiver, and if you say that you dropped the player then there is no way then that they will allow a RMA. Also I have heard that they do not have any H120's left so there is not much they could do anyway.

Also there is almost no way they can prove that you opened up the player. It is just 10 torx-5 screws and there is no warrenty seals on anything. The player is acctually really easy to take apart.

There is absolutely no cosmetic damage, no paint chipping, nothing. My IHP120 has not been out of its case more than a couple hours since it arrived. It dropped about 3 feet onto a linoleum floor while in its case. After the fall it worked fine for the next 15 minutes then froze and has not worked properly since. I have an extended warranty; I guess if I paid for it I might as well use it. I was just hoping that maybe there was an easy fix so I wouldn’t have to be without it for the next few weeks.
