I want to upgrade my computer so I can listen through headphones late at night and not disturb my wife. Currently I have a Creative Sound Blaster Live! card, and it's only saving grace is there is an actual working headphone jack on the front of my computer case, other than that it's terrible. I would like to get a card/IC/amp combo and have it come in less than $500. I'm not up to date on the latest computer hardware, so what do you recommend?

Keep in mind I'm not some audiophile who can hear the difference between tube sockets and such, I just enjoy great sounding music.

Thanks.

First of all i wouldnt really say that the sblive is a terrible card, it sounds pretty decent through the rear out of it with those KX drivers.

I'd recommend getting this setup.
1. Soundcard - EMU 0404 - $100
2. Amplifier - Perraux SHX-1 - $200
3. Interconnects - Headphile Silver RCA Interconnects. - $60
4. Soundcard #2 -Audigy 2 for surround sound.- $60 (great for watching dvds, games IMO )

Total - $500
