I have downloaded the file from http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_dsp_xgeq

I tried extracting the file with 7 zip

When trying to install component in foobar2000 under preferences:components, the extracted file doesn't show up.

I'm not well versed with software, and my best friend would usually help me with loading stuff on my computer, but he's gone.

Can someone please give me very basic, step by step instructions? I already tried following xnor's instructions... http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=88505

Thank you so much!

After you unzip the files. You need to go to configure > Components and click install and choose the path where you unzipped it, to install the components.

From the install components page of foobar2000, when I open the folder that contains the unzipped file, no file is displayed, just an empty window.

If I open the folder using windows explorer, the file is shown, unzipped.

Any ideas? What's my next step?

I installed mine a long time ago. Can you choose the zip file (don't unzip it) when you click install from foobar, because that's the sample option shown in the 'file type'

hydrogenaudio also states that:

1. Install the downloaded zip file using the Components preferences page.

When I manually open the zip folder to select the zipped file, no files are displayed to select for installation...

don't manually open the file install it threw the component option in foobar itself you will find this in the preferences options. its at the top of the page and the install button is at the bottom of the component page. if there is no file in the zip you need to download it again there should be a .DLL file in the zip

I believe you have clicked "Apply". Did you try re-downloading the component and try reinstalling again?

I have tried with multiple downloads. I did a recheck, and I am pressing install.

I unfortunately really need the added extension of this equalizer.

k its in the right folder did foobar ask you to restart?  I'm assuming it did.... now open preferences, go down to playback, select DSP manager, move the equalizer into the active dsp box with the arrows and you should find the ability to find the EQ in the view tab in the top of foobar

Can you give me a link on the add-on you are trying to install? I can test it for you My EQ extension looks different. My Foobar2000 components lists like this:

That link is to download the Foobar player itself. I would need the link to the component you are trying to install.
