Pre-echo related, LAME 3.92 with --alt-preset standard is noticeabily better than ATRAC 4.5. In other respects, maybe not so obvious, but it seems to me that LAME MP3 is more transparent.

This is just about the compression format. Another thing would be the quality ot the headphone output of a MD and a portable MP3 unit, I guess here things can vary quite a lot.

But, as Joe says, it would be interesting to know other people's experiences.

I have a hard time believing a sharp mdsr60 is going to record as well as a current-gen MD with ATRAC-R/S. My 770 and N1 both record better than my 831, which does generate obvious artifacts.

ATRAC has been improving steadily (though not as dramatically as pure software-based recording).

Both mp3 and ATRAC would be past tense now if companies weren't stalling by selling us old-res hardware while closing in on technological/legal copy protection for new-res media.

I do want an iPod, actually. But I also want that new Sharp with the 1-bit amp.
