Dr. Meier replied to my inquiry on a Sennheiser HD600 replacement cable as follows:

I'm right now waiting for an offer from Oehlbach to produce me
such a cable.

They have a nice microphone cable and some tests have shown it
to be an excellent headphone cable also. Good sound, light
weight, no microphonic effects, durable.

The idea is to sell the cable in combination with an HD600 or
HD650 for only 20,- ~ 30,- extra. Separate cables will sell for
around 70,- ~ 80,-

Sennheiser has been so kind to provide me with all the technical
specifications of the small plugs that connect their cable to
the headphone. The Oehlbach cable will also have plugs that are
made exactly according to these specifications.

As I haven't got a final offer from Oehlbach yet, I can't give
you definite prices right now as well as an exact date when the
cable will be available.

The information I got from Sennheiser will not be given to any third party!

I am fairly new to headphones, having just acquired my first headphone amp (a B-Tech courtesy of London Luke!) and Sennheiser 580 headphones.
Having read about the improvements possible with a cable upgrade (and being shocked by the price of repacement cables!!) I am becoming curious about having a DIY cable made.

A couple of questions!

1. Is there any solution in sight to the problem of acquiring the connectors for Sennheiser 580/600? Cannibalising a stock cable costing £25 seems wasteful!

2. Would a decent extension cable (eg Grado) serve as a decent cable with the addition of Sennheiser clips?

Thanks.

£160 for 2 metres or £350 for 5 metres is an absolute JOKE. We are talking "2 metres of copper" here. Russ Andrews sells some pretty good items as well as some pretty "iffy" items. I had dealings with him many years ago when he was selling "acoustically treated sheeps wool" for £80 a lb (pound weight) and claiming his "sheeps wool" outperformed any other sheeps wool...........

I could go on but I think I've said enough.

Let's source the connectors and let's make up a cable that will put these pisstakers out of "their" business of ripping people off....... £160 my arse.

Pinkie.

BAD Dave,

cannabalizing the stock connectors right to the pins is not for the faint of heart. Grafting new cable onto a short length of the original is more feasible, though the mechanical integrity needs some consideration.

Excluding the connectors there is a big choice of cable - preferably it should be fairly flexible and not microphonic but there is a big range to choose from.

Hopefully, someone will make a Senheiser connector available - assuming there are no patent or licensing issues - though don't expect it be cheap! The stock connector unit cost is cheap because its molded on but you need a lot of tooling investment to do it. An 'audiophile approved' quality connector will not be cheap in small quantities (very small quantities for such a specialist item). For comparison, look at the Cardas tonearm connector - this is v.expensive because it's high quality and low volume. Also the new Bullet plugs (highly recommended, by the way) are expensive for what they are - the materials can't be too expensive so I expect the high price is going to pay off the tooling charges.

Would using a short length of the old cable in this way affect sound quality by much?

This is true but Richer Sounds often advertise stuff they don't have. I had a pair of HD600s paid for at my local store for 8 months and in the end I cancelled and went to Sevenoaks who supplied them within a week.
