Here is my latest little project :D

These Headphones started life as a birthday present that I gave to my younger brother years ago. He has really enjoyed them but has given them a hard life with me having to replace the jack multiple times.

I finally decided that the cable had become too short and too flimsy and was due for replacement. I replaced the cable with something a little more substantial and a proper 6mm jack. Unfortunately during testing we managed to turn the gain on one of my headphone amps a little high and blew the element.

I sorted him out with a new pair of 419's for his next birthday, since then the 418s have been sitting in my garage for a few months gathering dust while I have been working on other projects (hybrid valve guitar amp/JLH class A/wide baffle speakers).

I stumbled across the parts express headphone elements after picking up some replacement car speakers. I put an order through with the elements, a bunch of tweeters and some ferro-fluid on Thursday.

When I arrived home from work today a box of goodies had arrived at my door :D

I had pulled the 418's apart when the element blew and had not bothered to put them back together. Today I removed the sealed surround using a razor blade and pried the old elements out with a small flat headed screw driver.

There was not quite enough space for the new elements because they are a little wider than the stock ones. I balanced them on top of the original mounting and tacked them in place with a couple of drops from a hot melt glue gun. I then sealed right round the edge of the element with hot glue.

I used a little modelling clay and polyester fill to deaden the cups and added an extra N45 6x6mm neo magnet to each of the drivers for that little something extra :)

First impressions, these play deep!! Awesome bass - deep but clear. I have not made my mind up on the mids yet but treble seems decent with these.

Further listening impressions to follow....

They isolate ok.

Unbeleivably good bottom end on these, very well controlled with bass/mid bass. Highs are a little subdued but my ears are quick to adjust. I think there is a bit of colouration with these but in a warm forgiving way.

Anyone incorperate a ribbon into a headphone before?

I remember Pioneer and Sansui (not 100 % sure) have made ribbon headphones before in the 70s-90s, but I don't know how they perform.
