I've got some files (LP's that I've recorded onto my laptop) which happen to be on a Mac. I did this with the thought that I would eventually put the files onto my external hard drive which is formatted to my PC. I didnt foresee any trouble and thought that I'd be able to just plug the external HD into the laptop and be able to trasfer the stuff no problem. Well that wasnt the case. Its telling me that the HD cannot be modified. Is there anyway around this problem?

Your external harddrive is probably formatted with NTFS, which is a proprietary MS Windows file system and can be written to from Mac OS X. Only read access..

You might want to check out NTFS-3G ( http://www.ntfs-3g.org ), or transfer the files via network or another media (ex. DVD).

Can you use FAT formatting?

I had a similar (stranger?) problem with an external usb drive that allowed me to transfer files between mac and pc for a week or so, then 'changed its mind'. Now I don't seem to be able to transfer between the two regardless of formatting, and I'm not sure what has changed...

Yes, that's an option. Since FAT32 are read/write on Mac OS X as well..
FAT32 don't support files larger than 4GB though, which 'might' be a problem.

I know what it feels like. From the time I switched soon to be 4 years ago.
You will get a swing of it eventually...
