There are all kinds of little magnets on Amazon, got me to thinking if you used the right materials you could make magnetic ear pads.......has anyone gone down that route?
No waaay! I was just doing a search earlier this week for little magnets on Amazon too along with metal rings that are the diameter of the Audeze earpads. The idea is to attach the metal rings to the 3m strip on the bottom of the Audeze pads. Then use a 3D printer and create thin plastic rings with small circular slots and embed the little magnets into them and attach the 3D printed rings to the base of the ear cups. Then I should be able to swap between different ear pads that have the metal rings attached to them. It's likely that I'll have to make 3D printed rings for both the ear cup and earpads if I can't find metal rings that are the same diameter as the Audeze earpads. My biggest concern, though, is how the sound signature of the headphones will be impacted by adding these extra parts. So far this is just an idea.
I didn’t have much luck with magnets but that’s probably because I didn’t order thick enough ones so they were relatively weak.
I did have very good with a twist on system, worked well but with constant pad swapping at this stage I was breaking the tabs off the rings a few times a week. Rather than redesigning to be more robust, I sunk in a channel around the circumference of the baffle and put a rim on the pad ring that can just pressure fit in, intent was to use adhesive on it but I got the tolerances close enough that it’s not required. I’m out of town until Tuesday night but if anyone is interested I can post pics/models.
