Hi

My first post so please handle with care and be welcoming!

I've been happily using Grado 225e's almost since they were released and have just purchased a second hand Grado RS2 originals, mainly because of the price, a bit risky without hearing them, but felt it was worth a punt.

I realise that we all have different sensory experiences and hear things differently but having listened to the RS2's am unsure what I should be expecting and whether perhaps they are tired.

My 225e's present lots of detail, airiness, sound-stage, separation, natural sound, but can be a little forward on treble and vocals, sometimes even to extent that it jarrs. Critical sound quality overall could be described as a bit loose, lacking a little refinement or sharpness (using everyday adjectives as am not up with head-fi jargon). I hope some of that makes sense.

Listening to the RS2's. my first reaction was that they sounded compressed in comparison, as if there was a veil between me and them. I thought perhaps they were a greater load than the 225e's so turned up the volume and found that whilst everything was there and with a smoother and more refined sound to each instrument, the airiness around the instruments seemed lacking.

I am now unsure if that is simply me being unused to a more refined (less loose) sound or if they are actually lacking in their expected performance. I ask because I can still return the RS2's and am unlikely to find another pair of RS2's to compare to.

I'd be most grateful for any assistance.

Simon

p.s. please ignore the GS Solo UL in the pic below, it's also a new (2nd hand) addition but I haven't started with that in earnest yet.

Tell us what you mean by "originals".  One with a wooden button on the ear cups?

In any case the way the two should sound relative to one another is about 180 degress from what you described.  caveat: I have not familiarity with your kit feeding and powering these cans.

Thanks for your response.

These do not have buttons, does that make them older or later version of RS2?

Can you explain what you mean by "180 degrees from what I described".

You'd have to post a picture for me to tell.  My guess is that they are probably the "i" version.

It means exactly the opposite of what you described.

Since getting the RS2's and spending some more time with them, I think I'm beginning to understand them better. The veil I had mentioned is actually the lack of vagueness of instruments. The openness I was hearing on the 225e's once compared to the RS2 is actually a lack of sharpness. On the RS2 everything is much crisper, clearer, more focused with perhaps a richer warmer tone. Violins for instance are more emotional, if that makes any sense.

I think I'm also picking up more detail on the RS2.

....though I am having to turn volume up higher on RS2's. Are they harder to drive that 225e's?

Not by their specs.  However, their sound stage is much larger and they don't have the same slam as the SR cans.  Therefore you may be adding volume to compensate for the sound signature differences.
