What would a decent price be for a used R30 in excellent condition? Also, would there be any reason to choose something like an R30 over an R50? I've heard the R30's headphone out sounds better (the R50 has a little clipping at higher volumes).

Any advice would be appreciated. I'm looking for a good, older minidisc recorder (I have an R55 now, but am looking for something from the "brick shape" era...

thanks!

I'd say $50 to $75 USD is tops for something like that, although you'd probably see eBay bidders going higher. I've seen R50's selling for $150 to $175 on a regular basis on eBay.

appar111,
the r50 is a real eye-catcher, and is quite brick like with the square magnesium shell. i agree the headphone out is not the best (although not bad), but if you ever get a portable amp like a cha47, the r50 has one of the best line outs i've heard from a portable: crystal clear, uncolored, with great detail and bass.

The only advantage I see to getting the R50 is if you get one made in Feb or earlier of the year it came out, you can disable SCMS. That means you can make a digital copy of a digital copy. This is the only model that ever came out that I know you can do this on. Check it out here:

Edit: The MZ-R700/900 can also disable SCMS, but in doing so, it records one very long track.
