Hey guys!

I've only recently started listening to high quality music (currently using a Fiio X3) and want to buy my first Over-Ear headphones. I mostly listen to rock (from Akira Yamaoka to Radiohead), but my go-to artist is Metallica (from Ride the Lightning to Beyond Magnetic).

Looking around, everyone seems to suggest either Shure SRH840 or Beyerdynamic 770 250ohm, which are great for my budget, but I don't know which one works best for Metallica. I play the guitar myself, so I'm hoping to get a headphone that makes the guitar track as sharp and clear as possible, not letting the bass muddle it, while keeping the overall song enjoyable.

Thanks!

I you want clearer guitars, get the SRH-840, although it's still a touch warm in the upper bass. The DT770 though as long as your amp isn't distorting will just hit you with more bass drum slam, but the bass guitar will be very audible (unless you're listening to And Justice For All which sounds like Newstead didn't show up during recording).

Thanks for the answer!

Shure seems like what want, but sadly I can't afford that with an amp. Whereas with the DT770 I can (and I think I have to) get an amp like the E12.

I have never used an amp (and don't know anyone who does), so I don't really know (despite a couple of hours of reading about them on here) how big of a difference that would make.

honestly with just the Shure 840 the X3 should be fine, an I agree.

I've heard the 840 before an I enjoyed it very much, another closed back you might enjoy too is the Sound Magic Hp 100, right at $179 on amazon, they are easily one of my favorite under $200!

Using an amp will only tighten up the bass impact on the DT770, but not necessarily make the guitars any less affected by the bass.

This statement leads me to suggest looking into Grados (if you are fine with open-back headphones).  I still have yet to hear better electric guitar (obviously in my opinion) than what my former SR325is produced.  Personally, I loved Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, etc. with my SR325is.  I haven't owned the DT770, but I would easily recommend the Grado sound over the SRH840 for what you are looking for.

indeed, for open backs Grados are a great choice

I haven't owned the DT990 (and I thought the DT880 was just okay for rock), but based on what I've seen about it and how great the T90 and T1 are, this is likely another good suggestion.  By the way, congrats on winning the K812 giveaway!

I doubt he won it, unless it's some one's alterante account. I mean a day old account winning a K812 doesn't seem... legit? Plus that ended like 2 days ago

either way

I've owned both the DT 990 an DT 880 an I like them both with rock!

Yeah, you're right.  I didn't notice the joined date.  The winning profile name was extremely similar, though.

Grados SR325is is sadly out of my budget. But I'm really looking for a closed-back anyways, cause I like blasting metal at night (when everyone else in the house is asleep) to keep myself awake.

I originally intended to get the M50x, but most people who recommended it listened to hip-hop, pop, or electronic, and said "It works fine with rock,... I guess?... I mean... it works with everything..." which put me off a bit.
