Well, the title says it all...

If it's in the vein of S/T & Version 2.0, I'm in.
If it's in the vein of Beatiful Garabge, I'm out.
If it's something all together new, I'll give it a shot.

Reviews I've read so far don't seem to paint a good picture.
So any insight you can pass along would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ian

I'll have it in a couple of hours but probably won't get around to playing it until later tonight.

First impression is that its OK. Nothing really stands out so far. One or two good songs like "Why do you love me" and "Its all over but the crying" may have potential but I gotta listen to it again. Some things are along the same vein as beautifulgarbage and some are in the same vein as Version 2.0 so far nothing is standing out as better than either. Like I said...first impression.

Checked the samples at Amazon, sounds much different than the soft electro pop of "beautiful garbage" much edgier with distorted guitars loud and up front in the mix, a grunge version of Garbage. Doesn't really sound like any of thier previous albums, heading in the right direction for my taste.

Butch Vig handling sound no surprise with the new direction style has taken here. Will pick this up at Best Buy for $9.99

But Vig has handled production on all the albums, hasn't he? As well as drumming and recording and engineering and just about everything? Maybe he doesn't do the recording himself. I always thought he was a little too heavy handed with Garbage. Too much production. Too many vocal tracks. Just too much of everything. Some good songs, though.

Looking at three previous Garbage CDs now...........everything you say above is true about Butch Vig. I suspect new album also recorded at Smart Studios in Madison WI like previous ones.

Well, Bleed Like Me is up your alley then. It is a much leaner work; for Garbage anyway. Its really just a straight pop rock album.

Hmm, I'm surprised to hear that. Is it a different sound overall than the single, because that sounded like it had an awful lot of work in the studio. Vig is kind of obsessive with his Garbage production work. I did like the first album, but not really enough to get any of the next ones so I honestly don't imagine this one will make it to my wishlist ahead of those. But they do have a nice dynamic sound.

Ok got this at lunch........heard the 1st five tracks, very good but different form other work, especially lightweight "beautiful garbage"

Sound is more raw guitar driven, very up front in the mix with distortion and slightly detuned bass give a heavier sound. Similar sounding would be stuff like Veruca Salt, L7, Yeah Yeahs etc this is not obtuse indy stuff.....it rocks pretty hard and has some interesting variation. No return to the smooth hybrid electronica/rock stylings of 1st two albums either......Shirley is ready to rock, will finish CD tonight but really like so far.

listened to it for the first time this morning, not bad but really a bit simplistic, the relentless barrage of rent-a-riff 4/4 time rock songs got a bit tiring after half an hour. I really liked Beautifulgarbage, I thought it was wonderfully off-the-wall, this is a bit of a disappointment.

Very suspicious of this album, spoken as someone who's seen them twice live, and who loves their back catalog, even "Beautiful...".

The first single sounded like an early-80's Pat Benetar reject, which coming from me, is NO COMPLIMENT....

I'm gonna buy it, but I'm not enthusiastic...

I like early albums of Pat Benatar ,,,,,,,,,

Since you like classic Nirvana and QOTSA I see no reason why you would not like 2005 Garbage sound.

Altough the hard rock style of new Garbage might rekindle vague memories of Pat Benatar, Joan Jett etc the music sounds much different. The guitars are not clean but intentionally dirtorted to create darker raw heavy dense sound that has been filter through a post grunge prism. If you are expecting continuation of mid 1990's Gabage sound don't buy this, they are moving in new directions.

Finished the album there are a couple requisite sad ballads for Shirely to vent and show sensitive side, also couple tracks abandon new raw guitar sound and return to "classic" electronica of first two Garbage albums.....so brief bridge has been built to make old fans happy, but 2005 Garbage is exploring other sounds now instead of revisiting old style.

After reading the responses above (Thanks everyone!) I decided to pick it up.
I have to admit that I like it a lot. And the album just flies by. For me, it's always a good sign when I get to the end of an album and am waiting for the next track, and am disappointed when there isn't one.

I'm not sorry to say I dislike BeautifulGarbage a lot. And while I wasn't looking for a return to the ultra-slick rock sound of their first two albums, I was hoping for a move away... WAY away from the third album. And here I was not disappointed... there's definitely the "bite" that wasn't there in the last album.

It definitely requires more listens to really get a feel for the album's strengths and weaknesses, but so far, so good for sure.

Thanks again for all the input!

I agree with you. "Why do you love me" and "It's all over but the crying" are the only two songs that really stand out for me. The other songs are okay, but I just have a dislike for choruses that seem to be just one sentence over and over again, which it seems that many of the songs on this album have. I really like their style in "Garbage" and "Version 2.0", and I also liked "BeautifulGarbage", but I don't think they increased their fan base with that album.

I agree "BeautifulGarbage" was very eclectic, and that's why I like it a lot. I have to say this album is a little disappointing, but I still love Manson's style!
