hi
focusrite scarlett 2i4 have build in dac and amp right ?
how does it actually work ? can i use the build in amp and dac with both headphones and speaker at the same time ?
if i plan to buy headphone amp and active speaker with build in amp, can i use the 2i4 as just a dac for both ? or does it auto amp it up 2 times ?:P
sorry im pretty noobish :P
also how good is this compare to the modi/magni or odac+o2 combo ?
can the 2i4 actually drive dt150 or hd650/hd600 ?

The scarlett has a built in dac and headphone amp. You can use the headphone output and the speaker output at the same time. Connecting a headphone amp and speakers should also work if you use for example the unbalanced output for the headphone amp and the balanced output for the speakers. I could not compare it to the modi/mangi but they will be most likely better since the are focused only on sound playback while the focusrite is a recording card.

I've used the smaller 2i2 version, but the sound out of the headphone amp was ok. Nothing special, just clean output. One thing to know is that the output impedance is around 50 ohms and the 2i2 has quite a limited output, it can drive 32ohm headphones like M50's or MDR-V6's to high enough volumes, but anything harder to drive than that would be a bit of an overkill. However, 2i2 is USB powered, 2i4 isn't, so it might have more power.

cool, I am curious myself and might get one for recording and to use as a headphone amp.

I actually ended up getting a Fast Track C600 and this is amazingly good as a preamp. It's basically a high-end 4 channel pre at an affordable price. It has two headphone out jacks and functions really, really well as a headphone amp. Beautiful warm sound. Love it to no ends! If this is within reach near my desktop, I never need any other headphone amp, ever. It'll drive anything I plug into it.
