Is it possible to put either DIY or 3rd party foam tips on the "semi-canalphone" models such as JVC FX55, Sharp MD33, Pioneer, etc., instead of the rubber ones? I like the foam better.
I just tried modding my Sony EX-81's with Shure Foamies after reading this post. I cut out the tube in the center with a paring knife. I got them inserted in my ears easy enough, but the sound was uneven, so I had to play around with the depth of the insertion a little. The seal was pretty good. The problem was when I took them out, the foamies remained in my ears and I had to have someone else remove them with tweezers. With the tube cut out they are too loose to remain on the stems of the headphones, which was probably the reason for the uneveness of the sound. I wouldn't recommend this, unless you are real handy with a pair of tweezers on the go.
Thanks for trying that out Pete7. That's exactly what I was wanting to achieve -- a more isolating seal with a non-IEM earphone. However, I guess the removal difficulty answers the practicality question... Thanks for that.
I haven't had much experience with foamies, can they be stretched much? I was able to fit a pair of Ety ER4 tri-fanges (very small center tube) on a pair of Pana RP-HJE70 and HJE50 without much problem, so depending on if they can be stretched, it can be done.
