Fixed line out and variable line out?

Additional random information:
I've read that sometimes the volume of variable line outs is dictated at the DAC level (in CDP of course). The thought, I think, is that this gives you a variable line-out without having to push it through a potentially noisy variable resistor.

blip: Yup, but usually this is just done by actually decrasing the dac's resolution, because that's the cheap way. That means lower level = less bits active.

Is that how it works? I always wondered about that... Somehow I thought that they would use a DSP to scale the signal down... but I guess that shows too much faith in CDP manufacturers.

A DSP is still digital, decreasing bit depth
