My question is it worth it, given that I can buy one used for around 200£? As my purchase of Sony NW-A55, was a let down sound wise and not really that big or noticeable upgrade from a smartphone I am hesitant to buy something else now..
Or I would be better of buying lets say a Fiio M9? I know they are not on the same boat with X7, so to speak, but M9 using newer tech and so on.

The X7 has a better sound than the M9.
But, try to save some extra money and go for the M11.
way better and cheaper now thanks to the M11pro.

Go for M11 if you do not want to throw X7 away because of its interface.

Playing with DAP does not make you violent, lag in the interface will.
