Favorite Junk Food

Japanese fast food is my favourite. The problem is of course when you live on the other side of the world its not fast food - it's either " " deconstructed " " in fancy restaurants, utterly butchered or even worse, made fusion cuisine by a non-Japanese chain and still made to pay through the nose for it, or done right at maybe one place that has endless queues. And it's never the same compared to slurping it at a bench from a hole in the wall when you make it.

^Since you mentioned Japanese food here’s some good Japanese junk food I had recently

Japanese pancake. Very difficult to find in America but occasionally you see it. Although it’s considered a breakfast thing, I prefer to eat it for lunch

Japanese Coca Cola. On extremely rare occasions you will see it in America. I just had it yesterday.

Here’s the back of the can. Compared to the American version it tastes less syrupy. Kind of reminds me of the Mexican version of Coca Cola. I actually like it better than the American version

Here’s a Japanese cheesecake I had

Queso Fundido with Chorizo

This is a really nice Mexican dish. It’s melted cheese with chorizo sausage. You dip tortillas chips or whatever into it.

Puffy Tostada

This is a very rare but excellent Tex Mex style dish. It’s deep fried tortilla and it puffs up with air from the heat of the oil. It’s then served with melted cheese. Wow, I love it.

Fried shrimp tacos

I really like this dish. It’s deep fried shrimp in a taco shell. I think it originally comes from San Diego because several years ago I had fish tacos in San Diego and it was similar. It’s very different from tacos you see in Los Angeles by the way

Arancini

Italian deep fried rice balls

I really like this a lot. This version I had at an Italian restaurant was filled with rice, cheese and Italian sausage. It’s sort of like an elegant version of junk food

Detroit Style Pizza

Detroit Style Pizza is trendy right now in a lot of places. It’s a fat pizza basically with a focaccia like pillow texture . This was a good version because it was crispy and even the pepperoni had a nice crispy well done char to it.

Notice the burnt cheese at the edges. It’s actually a good thing and has good texture and flavor. It does not have a burnt taste even though it is. I like the flavor.

It kind of reminds me of Peqoud’s Pizza place in Chicago which is a famous hot spot that uses this similar technique of burning the cheese.

Interestingly in some parts of Massachusetts you can get thin versions of the burnt charred cheese pizza which is labeled as “bar pie” and that’s very good too……(By the way, don’t get Massachusetts pizza confused with New Haven Connecticut style pizza. It looks similar but different)

Oklahoma style smash burger

I rarely mention burgers because they are so common to the point that it’s “boring”……However the Oklahoma smash burger is trendy right now and now in fashion and has grown in popularity. And it has exploded on YouTube

A very nice version I had recently.

Notice the crispy charred edges of the beef…..Mmmmm. Crispy and juicy. You know you want this!

I grew up in Bay Ridge Brooklyn and I'm a major pizza snob.

Have to try a Detroit style pizza one of these days, that looks like my kind of pizza. You had me at crispy...

Double Big Mac

Just had the Double Big Mac for lunch. The standard Big Mac has 2 meat patties so the Double Big Mac has 4 patties as you can see in the photo

Here’s the box.

Some Big Mac observations:

The Big Mac debuted in the 1960s. But by today’s American standard, it’s actually not a big sandwich because back in the 1960s, American food portions were smaller. So I feel that the double portion size of the Big Mac should really be the default Big Mac and perhaps the regular Big Mac should be renamed the Classic Big Mac…..or perhaps I’m just over analyzing it.

By the way, if you get the Double Big Mac, make sure you get napkins because your gonna need it!

McDonald’s Double Filet-O-Fish sandwich

This the famous fish sandwich but what’s different is that it has 2 fried fish patties instead of one. Just had it now for lunch. Not sure if this particular version will be permanent on the menu

I grew up on these and if youre from the Ohio and nearby midwest states, you know about these cookies. They are the tastiest and best cookie ever. We used to trade for these at lunch in elementary school (and I am four times the age now lol). And if you can find them today, theyre incredible. On Amazon, you can buy a case of 9 boxes...and its worth it (but not for your waistline tho).

I present you Archway Frosted Lemon cookies.
