Hi all.

Fast post ; Wadia 301 is finally here. The meridians are here from a while instead.

I must say that I've not been overly impressed from meridians
preliminaries 1 impress little more then the other two refined unit but both fall short on fun , unfortunately for me they're lacking some ( upsampled or not ) bits of joy , trying still to get used to the sound though

I'm plugging up the Wadia in a few time .

back later

I've actually had similar thoughts when hearing the G08, it's smooth and very refined but really lacked dynamics. Just seemed like the joy of the music was missing.

boodi,
What's your amp and headphone that you tried w/ the Meridians?

I'm giving as always a turnaround to my preferred ( hd580 , recabled kimber hd600 , ps-1 & hp-2 the most )

edit : amp is (quite only) the Gilmore Reference as it's the most neutral while dynamic , to my ears , of the bunch I own , nice solid state amp and it suits well all the headphones I've tried it with

boodi,
It could be just a synergy or your sonic preference. The Meridian is very smooth and fun sounding in Mulveling's set up. I enjoy it with widerange of headphone w/ SDS: L3000, HD-650 w/ Zu, and Sony MDR-CD3000. I've yet to hear the Wadia but the Meridian is definitely sounding pretty good in my book. The G08 also sound amazingly fine with the HP-2 and Melos Sha Gold. Can you explain the sonic difference b/w the Meridian and Wadia? Are there big difference b/w G08 and G07?

sorry for the name thing..:P

it's bit soon to espress ..
but here we are so why not , here's some scattered thoughts..

I'm absolutely convinced synergy plays a very rilevant role in audio on mid-high-end gears , I think matching gears ( interconnects , the most ) can help very nicely to find the right tonality and to add those micro and macro sound elements that's worth adding for portray accuracy , or more concisely to shift the sound to a better tonal result

I find differences between the meridian units , the g08 is a more refined machine . The g07 sound less precise , the g08 has more precise nuances . Both share a quite same sound signature . For the fun factor , on some tracks/performance/genres I quite preferred the g07. On others and for other sound matters , I like the g08 . Still getting through ..
What's worth the money , that's always one of the biggest question .. and when it's about audio gears the thing get very hard to manage in mind , and it's often the wallet that decide instead and do the choice in real ..
I decided to try all of them , thinking on an upgrade from my Shanling s100mkII , and being after a Wadia from a time I finally had the chance to pull the trigger on one used Wadia 301 .

At the moment the Wadia is on my ears from very little time , I'm at the third cd I put on ... if ears don't lie too much to me today I sense a softer and dryer presence , and I'm having fun on it -as opposite to trying to get into the sound , which is a rather important information in my own list of audio prefs - At first it seems (bit?) less refined then meridians ( which oppositely seem to show very soon the details retrieval power and ability )
There's a nice bloom/presence on mids and bass , and the sound is nicely smooth but precise in timing throughout these frequences. The highs feel bit more detached from the rest , (harsh?) ; whereas I seem to feel they're more naturally and silky connected on the rest of frq.s on meridians , and without any hint of glare or harshness . Super smooth .

The g08 is a very fine source ; definitely you hear what's upsampling about with it quite from the beginning. I had to "adjust" to the sound a bit more then I usually do with gears ..
The g07 is a fine source too ; the more you pass time with the more you see the different colors it's able to get from the signal . It's a bit more veiled then the g08 ( and the Wadia seems to be more upfront&lively of both on first listen ) . Same adjusting needs..

Both seem to present the sound ...mm... as a bidimensional picture ( not to say they lack soundstage , but that's the closest metaphor I can tell about how they sound to me ) . Both are smooth , and rather dark , and rich , and omogeneous sounding . What I sense is details ( both are very detailed the g08 is a more refined detailer ) are brought out on a quite little separation of layers ( my ears ! , and early impressions in fast comparo with the wadia .. many things can easily change in fact the more you get used to a sound or another ) ; and , the stage - on the g07 more then on the g08 - feels mellow , and quite dense , but not in a bad way .

I don't know if you can grab much sense from what I wrote need a little more time with this three cd players to list in a better way impressions ( and to my own self too before posting ;p )

I find the Meridian sound very nice but also agree it's not as dynamic as I'd like. It's good bed time music for me.

Has any one every taken pics of the insides of these units? I'd like to see what's under the hood.

IIRC, Edwood took a pic of the inside of G08. I can't remember where in the forum I saw it, though.

EDIT - Found the thread. Scroll to the bottom of the page for the pics.

The g08 can sound very dynamic depending on the cables or amp. Most noticably with interconnect cables in my experience. With some cables I've used with the g08 like the oritek x1's can make them sound very dynamic, almost taking away the smoothness of the g08.

yes ..
I've read around a bit about it ..

I don't know what I would add on top of the 301 sound though at the moment ..
it feels so natural , it just plays music right
