So I am curious... has anyone ever crossed paths with an FM tuner that has a digital output, either optical or coax? I know this is probably a stupid question as radio is in the analog realm, but if a digital tuner goes through a set of A/D D/A steps, then what about bypassing the cheaper D/A and using my outboard....

The main reason for this dumb question is because I want to avoid a preamp selector, and use the input selector of my D/A unit instead. The second reason is only the really dumb are afraid to ask stupid questions...

I have never heard of a conventional FM tuner with digital outputs. All AM and FM tuners are analog receivers. Just because the tuner has preset stations and tunes and displays specific frequencies does not make it a digital signal processing technology.

Maybe some of the new digital satellite receivers for Sirius or XM digital radio have digital outputs.

I've never heard of it, but digital radio apparently does exist here in the US. There are about 40 stations transmitting digitally, much like Britian's digital radio, but using a different standard. I heard this from Resolution Audio who is going to be releasing a digital tuner. It will have a digital out that you can run through their Opus 21 CD player, or any other DAC or CD player with a digital in. Contact them to ask about it.

How come you want to avoid a preamp selector?
