I have tried Benchmark DAC1, Cary 303/300, dCS Elgar Plus / dCS Verdi Encore. The EMU0404 USB + laptop beats them all.

DAC1 sounds bright and aggressive while dCS sounds silky and laid-back with more low-level detail, however, the dCS sounds very dull and weak. The EMU0404 USB is both more aggressive than DAC1 and with more low-level detail than dCS. The bass sounds so amazing, it's not weak like dCS, it's very strong!

The background is blacker than any other combo I have ever tried! The speed and clarity is crazy, it makes the DAC1 sound very slow in comparison!

Great to hear that you like it!
To each their own...

I have tweaked the DAC1 like crazy, each little tweak gave big improvements. I have bypassed the fuses, used Nordost Valkyrja DC wiring, separately isolated the Toroidal transformer outside the chassis on Magix (crazy HUGE improvement in low-level detail!), jammed the inside full of ERS Paper, covered the outside with ERS Paper, wrapped Toroid with ERS Paper too! Bypassed input AC wiring of Toroid with 5cm Valhalla and plugged it into power strip. The signal path was crazy short and it gave huge improvements, but it's still not as good as EMU0404 USB in a direct comparison. With DAC1 the low-level details are cut off and it sounds veiled.

The pre-amp of DAC1 is equal to Foobar volume control, there is only a flavor difference; DAC1 veils/blurs the low-level details (boomy bass) while Foobar removes them which makes it sound edgy and empty. The best volume control I have ever tried is the one inside dCS, it's like Foobar volume control except it doesn't reduce the low-level detail! That's the only reason I bought the dCS, because of the volume control. However, I didn't realize that the wattage draw of the dCS makes it worse overall. It doesn't matter how perfect the source is, if it adds problems into the rest of the system it will be worse.

The dCS is only better when using a dedicated AC line for it AND optical connection between transport and DAC, then it's completely isolated from electrical noise. I boosted up the wattage of my desktop transport and it didn't affect the audio system at all, dedicated AC line and optical is the way to go, however, Toslink is not perfect, something new must be invented.
I found that dCS DAC + Toslink + computer was equal to dCS DAC + Firewire + dCS transport. The Toslink computer sounded silky smooth but empty, the dCS stack sounded full but with electrical noise added on top of the music.

Using electrical connection gave extra layers of low-level detail, but the electrical noise masked those layers, I found that after I lowered the wattage the improvement in low-level detail was crazy!

Low wattage/low weight components are more sensitive to vibration and AC power so those need to be fixed first. Big and heavy metal chassis dampens vibrations and a big power supply cleans AC noise, but IME they just blur the sound.

Okay, it is great that you like the EMU 404 so much, but it is not high end, so it should not be in the high end forum.

Yes, this should be moved to the low-fi source forum.

I have made video of my little EMU:

YouTube - Judge power cable plugged in

Cool!
And how much real difference did you find between using your Emu with/without all your features ?

Surprisingly enough (and believe me, I never thought I'd live to see the day), I actually agree with Patrick here, with some qualifications. The e-mu 0404 is pretty much a perfect DAC, in that it's completely transparent. A slightly different outlook than Patrick's, because the 0404 is the "best" DAC inasmuch as it's on the same tier as pretty much every other spec-equivalent DAC out there. That being said, maybe there's something to Patrick selling off his uber-expensive DACs for something much more reasonable? Of course, that doesn't justify the outrageous power cable purchases.

Why hasn't this been moved out of the high-end forum?

Or, better yet, why hasn't Patrick been banned?

I want to know why the OP is whispering so eerily in that video. Hahaha.

I like it when you say that everything in audio is vibration.
Makes you wonder just what is placebo effect... (caused by our brainwaves)

Isn't it possible that we are nothing but the vibrations of subatomic particles?
To quote Bill Hicks:
"Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather."

This is a pretty good reason. When one defines high-end so that everyone agrees then we'll see, aye?

Much better question

Seriously, this guy is a troll of epic proportions . . . or baths himself in snake oil regularly. I have trouble telling with how serious he is about it
