So, some EL34 amps can use only EL34 tubes unless you rewire things a bit, however others are more flexible. I'd be very interested in trying out tubes like KT88/6550 in the Head DT, but don't know what is required to do so.

Anyone know about this? What about doing conversion to 6B4G?

Thanks for any input at all. This headphone thing is becoming a disease...

Brian.

BTW, the MG Head uses EL84 tubes, not EL34.

Yeah, the thing isn't even here yet and I already want new tubes for it...

So, EL84.... That I'm not familiar with... Gotta look into that.

The U.S. designation for the EL84 is 6BQ5. You can use a 7189 in place of the EL84 with no modifications to the amp.

I have tried a BUNCH of NOS EL84/6BQ5's. They make a difference in the sound quality, but nowhere near as profound as the changes you get rolling the 12AX7. I highly recommend checking out triple mica 5751's instead of the 12AX7's. There's info in the archives about 5751's.

Enjoy!

I've got some great sounding 12AX7 and 5751s. GE black plates, Tung Sols, Raytheons, and Amperex Bugle Boys. Amperex is my favorite of the bunch, at least in my tube DAC. I'm still hunting down, in desperation, some Sylvania Gold Brands. They're supposed to be cream of the crop.

I'm looking at some Amperex Bugle Boy D Getters for EL84s. But at $100 a matched pair, I'm not ready to do it.

Thanks for the input.
