I think the title pretty much says it all...

Whilst the EJ1000 may be a boomy muddy POS normally, putting the Eggos into the headphone out seems to transform the player nicely...

Definetly no need for bass boost, granted its still a little overblown... but nothing too out of hand, the mids are a little lush, but thats good for female vocals, and there is a nicely etched (although not sharp) treble... all in all, for a modern player, even though i've had it over a year... it finally gets my thumbs up...

and volume... who said that modern PCDPs don't have volume?

these two together = tinnitus within an hour!

So... you won't see me criticising this player anymore... I just hope that the EJ2000 builds on this... if it does, i think i'll pick one up in a couple of weeks time

Plugging the HP890s into the EJ1000...

The headphone amp the EJ1000 is slowly but surely seriously getting a BIG seal of approval from me... I think it just sounds like crap with normal 'portable' headphones... but actually half to maybe even pretty decent, with efficient full sized 'phones

Fingers crossed, March 29th myself and Bangraman will be comparing the two models side by side

Duncan, I noticed (some time ago I don't recall) that you found the Senn PX200's to be a good match for the DEJ1000 as well. Unamped, which sound better? Does a Fixup amp make a significant difference? Which phones show more improvement?

What about the AKG K240S's? Do these make good portable headphones?

I do not need superior fidelity, but I do want good sound.

I actually think that a slightly recessed upper end can be desirable, as it is less prone to inducing hearing damage. The Sennheiser HD25SP only reproduces up to 16KHz. For a MSRP of $119.95 US I am sure Sennheiser could have extended this to reproduce the full (upper) spectrum, and so it seems to me that the intent was to cut off the most harmful frequencies.

I will mostly be using my setup portably, so I would prefer to not have to carry around an amp, however small (even a Fixup is one more thing to carry around, and another hundred bucks spent). As well, I would think the D66's would be somewhat of a hassle considering they do not rest comfortably on one's neck (not much of an issue in the house, but for their intended purpose..).

I would like others to comment on the sound out of their modern Sony PCDP; you could say I am skeptical.

Anyone with relevant comments.. do reply

Also, with my current discman, when I slightly carelessly turn it on its vertical axis, just before reaching 90 degrees the spinning disc inside touches something and consequently makes a fairly loud, unpleasant sound. It is more sensitive to this with ESP enabled. Using a disc I don't much care for, I've not been able to note any damage resulting. Does anyone know what could be wrong? Certainly this is not normal behaviour, right?

Hi Nales...

The PX200s are funny creatures (to me)... they sound brilliant out of the EJ1000 with dance music, that kick is really helpful from the Senns, considering that normally modern players clip / distort very easily...

For refined music, i'm not so convinced... I'm going to have to buy a second pair of PX200s to see if my pair is faulty...

It almost appears to be an impedance mismatch with the Senns, as my basslight Sony SRF-M48RDS with the PX200s sounds like I have bass-bins strapped to my head...

I don't know really, but if dance is your flavour.......

Do you get a hiss when using this combo? when i use it the hiss is VERY noticeable.

Erm... not exactly, no...

If there is a track that already has hiss, it seems a little more exageratted... but I can't say that I can hear it in normal operation?!

Any particular music / track / volume you want me to try with, just incase i'm just mentally ignoring it?

RATM's first album gives me the most hiss, and metallica black is pretty bad.

Duncan, I have no idea what the specs are on the PX200 but I did find them less efficient than Eggos. I confirm I'l be bringing the D-141 and the EJ2000 (aka the Gnat Squeak

) to our micro-meet. Just for 'fun' I did plug the EJ2000 into the S700 though and you'd never know the audio was being compressed.
I do agree however about what you said about recording on portable MD's (or recording out of portable CD's). The dubs I did in the plane from the EJ2000 to the MT888 didn't sound quite right. I ended up dubbing them again. Perhaps it's time for you to invest in an MD deck and not yet another classic PCDP...

Oh, and you have to listen to my D22 Eggos. I will explain when we meet.

Modded D22s? Damnit! I just sold mine. Oh well, me D66 is coming in soon. Supposedly it least the Osaka East post office on the 21st, and I have these ultra-modifiable EX70s to play with.
