I have an NEC which has served me well with over one year of heavy use. All the sony's I've had have died on me after about six months.

I've had bad luck with Lite On drives.... this is the second one which will fail to spin up after a prolonged read. I have to eject/reinsert the tray to get any more progress.

It might be my terrible luck with optical drives though, I don't think I've ever had a "good" one.

The Samsung 203N is a good one, especially when patched. Sammy just released the 223 and it's good, but the firmware isn't completely mature yet, it'll get there though, of course patching it helps as well.

Pioneer DVR-215D (or BK) is another excellent drive.

If you rip media, the Samsung is a better ripper. And the Pioneer doesn't have +R bitsetting.

Picked up a Pioneer DVR-216DBK and the things been pretty rock solid. To me a sata interface is a must. Not only do I find it faster at booting and reading my cds/dvds but its cheap! The only complaint I have is that it does become noisy when it reads/writes.
