I've decided I'm going with my first planar headphones, the Aeon X's from Drop. I'm trying to decide whether I should get the open or closed version. Not really sure what the differences are (bass, sound stage?). If the open has a larger sound stage, is the difference significant? How does the bass compare between the 2?

Any thoughts, opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hey there,

I think watching Resolve's video is a good step to get an idea of the difference between the 2

Outside of that, I think there are many reasons to consider closed or open headphones, one of them being your environment, I've found that to enjoy the Open HP you need a place in which there isn't noise around you (with noise I mean: traffic sounds, family using speakers that you can hear from 2 rooms across, etc...). Both closed and open provided amazing sound quality for the price and I am personally trying to buy a Closed X or Noire from DCA.

I hope this helps!

I have never heard them, but have been interested in them for years so always following the reports.
It seems like the consensus is that the closed one actually has the better tuning.
Additionally, the fact that a powerful portable DAC/Amp like the Chord Mojo or Hugo 2 can drive the AEON, the closed version becomes really attractive for travelling. The developer behind CHORD DACs, Rob Watts, is using the AEON closed for his travels.
That’s a really powerful endorsement of that headphone IMO.

The Open sounds warmer and bassier, smoother, and more intimate due to a more compressed soundstage.

The Closed has better sub-bass extension, leaner mid-bass, more upper sparkle, and a more spacious sound.
