I'm thinking of using a DAC with max 96/24 capability. Most of my music is within the resolution, but I do have some higher rez files, including DSD. Can I use software to downsample DSD or higher bit rates into a 96/24 (or 88.2/16, etc.) file?

My music server is a minimalist Aurender so I can't downsample on the fly.

And is this software tested for good sound?

If you use any music player in exclusive mode, it's going to change playback to the track for bit perfect playback. I tried downsampling some songs when testing out a couple of portable devices that could just do 24 bit/96 and Musicbee did great on them, didn't sound like any audible degradation with it playing them back as PCM. I like it since it's got enough features out of the box you don't need to shop for plugins like Foobar2000.

My music server is a minimalist Aurender... it doesn't do any processing on files and there are no plugins. Which is good for sound, just means I need to find standalone software that converts bit rates.

Foobar2000 with SOX plugin and SACD plugin is all you need to convert higher sample rate PCM as well as DSD to 24/48 KHz PCM files

Nice. I can run Foobar2000 on my Windows desktop and then copy the files over to the Aurender.

Do you have any sense of the SOX sound quality? I know it's been around a while as a utility, but does it give any options for what filters to use in downsampling, especially DSD?

Very transparent IMHO and have not noticed any loss in details and dynamics. For DSD, try all of them and see which sounds best
