My computer offers the following options:

Dolby Headphone:
Room 1 (Lively)
Room 2 (Large)

---------------------------

Dolby Pro Logic

Mode:
Music, Movie

Dimension:
-3, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, +3

Center Width:
0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7

Panorama:
Off, On

---------------------------

I've read the official description of these options, but I'm curious what people here find to be their preferences for music, movies, games...

Unless that's an older version, the Dolby Headphone room modes you listed are wrong.

DH1 - Studio
DH2 - Normal room
DH3 - "Wet" sounding room, like a stadium

I generally prefer DH2, as it sounds, well, normal, but if the music suits it I've been known to switch over to DH3 or sometimes DH1.

I'm sorry, there is a third option, which actually comes first, "reference"

What about pro logic settings?

Sounds like the order is reversed or something.

Unless the audio has matrixed surround and centre channels, there is no reason to use it.

DH1 studio
DH2 normal room
DH3 "Wet" sounding room, like a stadium

nice way to explain the difference in modes carl.

DH1 is more for your top end studios set-ups to me reference room is a bad choice of words why couldn't they just kept it simple and called it the studio room instead of REFERENCE ROOM!

I have just done first hand comparison between DH2 and DH1 with my own speaker set-up. DH2 seem more correct in terms of making intruments sound further with in the room.

From listening to DH2 in comparison to my own setup the two are almost the exactly identical, except for definition, DH2 seems to render a much clearer front image. This is just using music tracks even ones poorly mixed with the instruments sounding like they've been trapped in a funnel.

DH2 on my headphones seem to add a bit more highs to the instruments than my speakers it's amazing just how close they come.

Are there any Dolby Headphone units that I could have fun with that are semi-audiophile grade? I was looking originally at the JVC SU-DH1 for $129 I believe, and the specs on it are just awful. I don't think you can even plug a wall adaptor into it.

I know AKG makes the 999 I believe, but I don't want to spend $600 or $700 on a total system. I'm just looking for an adaptor, if any exists for a portable rig that has decent sound specs.

Thanks in advance!

The AKG units don't use Dolby Headphone, they use 22-odd predefined HRTF simulations, which may or may not match your own hearing.

Nothing strikes me as being "awful" about the SU-DH1, even if nothing jumps out as being spectacular, either.

I personally use the Philips AH1000, which is one of the better options, even if it's DAC is pretty manky.

Unfortunately, as there is so little demand, there isn't a lot of choice when it comes to high-quality implementations of virtualizations. Maybe Yamaha's YSH-1, which is coming around Q2-2007 (well, hopefully) will change that, but who knows.

I don't know about its specs being bad, possibly you can give us a reference for that. I think mine is very good and I am using it with Stax 404's one of the most critical/detailed headphones out there. Also it has a transformer input. I bought one with the unit from Audiocubes. I saw the SU-DH1 selling for less reecntly, I think at www.jandr.com. I am not sure that they had the transformer though.
