Since I've been helping my parents pack their stuff to move, I came across my Axim X50 and decided to resurrect it as my primary portable player. I want to buy a new SD card for it and I want it to be the highest capacity SD card that is capable of working with it. While I'm at it, if it can also support the newer higher capacity Compact Flash Cards, I wouldn't mind trying to find the highest capacity CF card it can use as well.

Does anyone know what the highest capacity SD and CF cards the Axim X50 can support are?

I had an Axim X50v once. Great device and enjoyed it until it got stolen.

4GB CF-II cards worked back then, and I see no reasons why larger cards wouldn't work. The stock OS does not support SDHC until you upgrade it to Windows Mobile 5.0. You can also try applying an unofficial custom cooked ROM (Windows Mobile 6).

See here for more details regarding getting WM6:

Edit: WinMob 5 does not work very well with the X50 series. I downgraded to back 2003SE after a day due to it sluggishness.

Much obliged walkingman! I figured I'd probably have to go the CF route with this but I was under the impression that when you get to the larger cards, they'd stop working.

Anyone else with any experience or info on this matter, please feel free to post!

I think some devices specified a max size on flash media because it was the largest at the time. Every device I have that uses CF or SD had cards installed that exceed the stated maximum.

Well I've read that Axim X50v owners has got 32GB CF cards working (while running WM5).

@Moontan, exactly. My gf's 5310 XpressMusic is advertised to take 4GB microSDHC but her 8GB card works fine on it.

Hmmm...I'll have to take a look at that. I remember that my old Dell laptop had an SD Slot and worked fine for cards upto 1 GB in size but with the 2 GB I bought a while back, it would read it as two separate drives when the card was inserted. Likewise, my new laptop plays nice with the 2 GB but couldn't read my friend's 4 GB at all. To be fair, i didn't get a chance to try another higher capacity flash card as I had none, but I guess I may as well pony up some cash and experiment a little bit.

Thanks for the help guys!

I love my dell axim x50, I use tcpmp with it and its EQ setting is godly. Wish my iphone has EQ like that...
If you play around with it, you can simulate many other DAP sound signatures.
I wonder what other audiophiles say about its SQ.
