I have his first album, which is passable baroque/folk pop, which contained his hit Blower's Daughter (featured in the movie Closer). However, I just couldnt help but think Damien Rice is just a poorman's Nick Drake. Having had good old Nick Drake change my life years befor Damien Rice ever hit the scene, I couldnt listen to Damien Rice without thinking "man, what a NIck Drake rip-off, and a poor one at that".

Of course, thats just my opinion. If you havent heard Nick Drake yet, then RUN, dont walk, and get him.

The album "o" by Damien Rice is great, quiet and powerful. "9" on the otherhand doesn't match the same highs and feels a let down in comparision to "o".

I'll have to disagree with you on that one. I feel "9" is every bit as powerful as "O", especially the opening song "9 crimes". Riveting stuff.

I have to say that I don't associate Damien Rice with Nick Drake at all. Other than being male singer/songwriters, their sounds and songwriting styles are completely different. 'O' is a great and powerful album that's only marred by the somewhat ridiculous operatic end to Eskimo. '9' is nowhere near as strong or as timeless but still has some stand out tracks like 9 Crimes, The Animals were Gone and Dogs.

I have O...

I also find myself reaching for just about anything but O when i'm in the mood for that type of music.

Jose Gonzalez
Iron and Wine
Eliott Smith

are all similar but directly superior in my mind, either way Besides being a bit bland in some parts O was a perfectly acceptable album.

I loved O, but I haven't been able to get into 9. 9 seems like it has more of the slight cheezyness, but less of the rawness and musicality that made that slight cheeze work really well for me
