Wow, this thread is still alive and kicking. Well I completely changed my mind on what I was getting. I decided to leave the CD/mp3 player for now. I'm not totally convinced at this point that there is a player that combines sound quality and usability to the extent I was hoping to find.
The conflicting reports on the hiss in the SlimX and it not being quite as good as the Sony in the sound department left me less than enthusiastic about the prospect of ordering one without hearing it for myself first. The Sony on the other hand is way more expensive here and ended up not being an option regrardless or it's strengths and weaknesses.
Instead I've gone the cheaper route and ordered a D-25S. I figured for the limited amount of mp3's that I really listen to regularly that I can't find on CD anymore can be converted to wav files and burned to disc. Ultimately it's about sound quality for me and the D-25S sounds like it's the best choice in that department. Plus with the money I'm saving I'm getting a used set of HD580's.
The more I've been listening to mp3's and oggs at work with my 280's the less I like them. I listened to Massive Attacks Mezzanine in ogg format on Friday and was amazed at how good the 280's had broken in but there was still a harshness that gave a bit of fatigue. I came home threw the disc in my wifes Sony d-ej621 and was blown away by the difference. Any harshness in the treble gone, the bottom end was deeper and tighter and there was detail, air and smoothness that was just not there in the oggs. So the combination of my sound card and the compression, while listenable, left alot to be desired in the long run.
Anyhow, thanx for all your advice.
