Hello,

I've been lurking around since a few days here and now I have decided to post a bit.

I'm starting to build up a portable rig. What do I have at the moment ?

Sony MZ-E10 MiniDisc, Sony MZ-R90 MiniDisc, Sony D-153 PCDP and soon the Apple iPod Mini (too bad my MZ-R50 died)

My headphones are Sony MDR-CD570 and MDR-EX70 (I'm buying Shure E2c's soon to replace these)

I had a few questions about the D-153. I don't really know if I like this one since I don't really have anything to compare it with, but does anyone have any experience with the line out on this one ? Should I keep it ? It also has the tendency to skip a lot (I'll check out the DYI repair thread for this). Is it anything like the D-151 ?

And is the Sony D-555 the same as the D-E555 ?

I would like to use this D-153 (or another Discman) as a desktop player for non-home use (office etc.). So what would a decent DYI headphone amp cost me ?

thanks, and be gentle on the newbie

as far as i know, the D-153 is exactly the same as D-151 but originally included a rechargable battery pack. as for its performance, i really can't say but i wouldn't expect too much from it.

i have not heard of a D-E555 but usually the "E" model series (besides the D-E900, D-E905, D-E805) are not highly regarded as well.

the D-555 on the other hand, is a highly sought vintage, the D-Z555 is the japanese clone of the same unit.

the MZ-R90 is known to have a LOUD motor, grinding noise can be heard on top of your music. if the MZ-R90 is anything like my MZ-R900, then the headphone out doesn't really have enough juice to drive certain phones.

i think the MZ-E10 generally had good reviews.

.

Any suggestions on a good PCDP ? My budget is rather small since I'm a student..

That D-E555 looks exactly like the D-E551, which is also very similar to the D-E775 and there are some more model numbers which all seem to be the same internally but came with different accesories. The 551 is actually not a bad compromise CD player, lightweight, 15mw output, good anti-skip and good battery life. I find it's pretty easy to listen to, although it lacks the detail and refinement of some the older vintage players.
