They seem to be a better value than buying a universal IEM and continually buying foamies for them. Can anyone attest to this? Is there a major difference in sound quality between the two? Also, does anyone have any recommendations? I was looking at the Sleek Audio Customs and the LiveWires. Anything else? I want the bass to be slightly more prominant than flat, but not out of control. I listen to mostly rock (Classic, Modern, Indie, Progressive), with an occassional foray into jazz.

It's not quite apples and oranges, but close.

Customs:

Great isolation
Great comfort for most
Lots more durable most of the time
Isolation and better components usually mean better sound quality

Universals:

Can be returned or sold off if your not happy, as opposed to customs which your kinda stuck with.
Often cost less
Can be more comfortable for some people.
Don't have to see an audiologist and get impression made and wait while they're made.
Allow you to decide which kind and model of IEM is right for you without great risk. Most of use here have been though several or lots of different IEM's before we found what we liked.
Universals are easier to take out if your in a place like an office where you need to communicate with people often. Customs are kinda awkward.

I use both. I use universal Atrios at work and Custom Livewires on stage.

I have however found that I generally prefer dynamic driver IEM's over armatures so I may wind up using the Atrios on stage even though they lack the durability, fit and isolation of the Livewires.

As for models of Customs, there seem to be more every week. There's probably a dozen companies selling Customs now. Have a look around and you'll find more you weren't aware of.
