Could a moderate amount of steam coming from my shower hurt my open back headphones?

I am just wondering if steam from my shower could hurt my Sennheiser HD-598. I've got them on one of those omega headphone stands so the inside is covered up but the outside is open, since they are open back headphones. I leave them in my room, which is connected to my bathroom. I have a bad habit of leaving my shower on while I'm doing homework so sometimes my room will get a little steamy. I didn't see anything on the forum that relates to this question, so I figured that I'd go ahead and post it. It probably affects a good amount of us here.

First of all, stop leaving your water running. This is the first stage in being worthy of nice things: don't be careless or wasteful.

As for damaging the phones... it could. Depends on the humidity level. But it could start to corrode the circuitry. If there's condensation, it might even fry the phone. So don't use them until you know they are dry again.

Maybe you can swing your headphone amp on a soap bar necklace.

I suggest some cellulose drivers.  They'll probably sound better while soaking up all that extra moisture created while you keep that shower running and you're in your bedroom trying to short-circuit the rest of your audio equipment.

I think you need to post this on Head-C*se.  They'll know what to do and I'm sure they'll be very helpful.

And it's a downward trend from here to there. Like the others in this thread I agree. Start being more water conservation conscious and your problem with your headphone is solved. Start being more water conservation conscious because millions in your generation are going to have to learn to.

The Second World War was fought for oil (no, really, Hitler wanted the oil fields in the Caucasus, and Tojo wanted the oil fields in Indonesia). Forget Mad Max scrounging for gasoline with rape-happy gangs on the prowl, we're more likely to start stabbing each other over fresh, potable water.

Why leave the shower running anyway, and then the only concern for it is moisture damage on headphones?! Jeeeez what is up with people.

Back during one of the many droughts in California, there was a common jingle that was used by some of the more "progressive" cities...

If it's yellow, let it mellow, but if it's brown, flush it down!

:p

^... lol.

I like how this thread has become all about his water habits. As it should. Seriously, turn the water off. Your grandparents would murder you!

Maybe his grandparents are from Texas or Kentucky and they deny evolution and climate change.

That generation doesn't need climate change to find outrage over wastefulness. They saw world wars, and the great depression. They know how precious simple resources can be.

My math: assuming he's at most 22yo (roughly the age that non-working students graduate from college), and median age for women getting married in Kentucky is roughly 25o, that would mean his grandmother could have been born around around 1943. So you're right, she might have seen WW2 at least.

But Kentucky passed the Creationism curriculum law in 1976, and people who believe in Creationism and deny evolution tend to be the same people who deny Climate Change, so there's one big hole in your hypothesis (contrary to popular belief, Creationism is a relatively new belief). Not to mention that the same people who fought WW2 and lived through the Great Depression also went for the biggest V8 engines they can find after that war and didn't realize what a waste that was until 1973.

To be serious and get back to the point, the answer is simple, quite aside from turning your water off and not exposing your headphones to any more moisture than you can help. A little moisture in the air and such is unavoidable; I'm also pretty sure the very occasional spattering of rain wouldn't totally ruin a set of open headphones. But with all that said, don't bloody well push your luck unless you like destroying hardware and wasting money...yours or someone else's. If you have an iDevice or a laptop, it has a hard shell which, for the most part, makes it resistant to water unless you dunk it or spray it directly. Open-back headphones, especially, don't have this; they're much more permeable by design. If there's grillwork that lets you see the drivers, then said grillwork will let water in; water on your drivers is going to make for a really bad day.

Not to mention it will probably make them sound "watery".
