Connecting a single line-out to an amp with L & R

Can someone please explain this to me?: Say I have a headphone amp with standard RCA L & R inputs in the back. Say I have a nice discman with a line out as well as a headphone jack. How does that single mini line out get into the amp? Do I use a cable that plugs into the mini line out but splits into L & R RCA terminators to go into the amp? Does that retain stereo separation?

Yes and yes. Stereo phone plugs and jacks have left, right, and shared-ground contacts--you wouldn't get stereo separation with headphones plugged into such a jack otherwise.

The Kimber Mini to RCA sold by HeadRoom is an example of the sort of cable you want. I'm not up on the current favorite around here, but I'm sure you can find out.
