I was wondering, why do you guys ask for serials when buying headphones? I assumed for safety concerns but wanted to be sure... After the whole TTVJ story I understand the matter.

Usually, we ask so we can verify existence for a purchase. 
 
Occasionally, there are design changes in a line, and a certain set of serial numbers will sound different than others, so people will want to know which group a particular pair belongs to

However, people never give the full serial, so kind a pointless IMO considering how easy you could see older threads posting the first numbers and paste them. I hope never have to worry about stolen headphones.
