For times when my iPod doesn't make a lot of sense, I'm currently using a Rio Chiba (256). It's smaller, lighter, less fragile, less of a worry to leave in a bag by the pool while I'm swimming and can't pay attention to it, etc.

But it's still almost too nice to treat that way. What's the absolute cheapest flash player there is? Let's assume sound quality and storage aren't important - even a 32 meg player would work. Just enough to load one (or two!) short album(s) on (punk's made for situations like this). 64 or 128 would be better, but not if the price is much higher.

Anything out there for ~30-40? Old models?

I have the Muvo NX 256. Smaller than the Chiba and pretty cheap nowadays. The tiny sucker is few-frills, mostly just turn on and play although it does have a custom EQ and can organize by folders. Got the Chiba because the 256 just wasn't enough memory. I only rip to 320 kBps, so could only fit a couple of CDs at best. The Chiba is 256 MB, but Scandisk cards are relatively cheap now too. Added 512 MB with a card from Newegg costing only $67.

Have you had a look at those cheap no name players? Their very cheap, although if they break (haven't heard of any information of such so far) you can't go to the manufacturer. They also don't need any software too.

Here's a link

There's a ton of options out there. Here's a deal I saw pop up today.

The CenDyne Grüvstick MP3+3 128MB MP3 player/USB pen drive with FM transmitter costs $46.50 at ComputerGeeks.com. Apply coupon code "DEALNEWS" for 10% off, a net price of $41.85. It's the cheapest 128MB MP3 player we've seen with an FM transmitter. .

I don't think this question has an answer. No matter how cheap a player is, you can always find one cheaper. Pretty soon they'll be giving 'em away free with a tank of gas. Or in a box of Cracker Jacks. Or Apple Jacks.
