Hi, im going to try some mods to my dac-1000. So far I got the ASE upgrade to it already and its even better now. So Im wondering if I can push it a little further with some upgraded caps and resistors. I am thinking about using some blackgate caps and vishay film resistor. Problem is Im at school currently and will be for several months so I do not have access to my dac to look inside to see what appropriate parts to order, and I cannot find any details about anyone else doing this kind of mod to it or any detailed internal photos, etc. So, Im asking for help for those who have done this, or have a dac-1000 to recommend me what parts to replace and what to order. I wanted to get a new dac but my better half said no new dacs so, im counting on mods to get some better performance.

PS, if anyone can recommend better performance parts or ones that are simular but cheaper, that would be great since I dont know exactly what or how much parts I have to order.

Thanks!

Dont do it!!!1111

Black gates are awesome in their own way when they are used in simple analog circuits where they wind up in the signal current loops - specifically simple SET tube amps, very simple SS amps, or output coupling caps*. I suspect it has something to do with lower THD than other caps but lack the desire, motivation, or equipment to test. When used in digital circuits, where they must handle ultrasonic frequencies, and not much normal audio they suck.

Maybe Oscon caps would work well, but I'd make sure the output stage is working 110% before I even touched a cap on a DAC.

*all of those things are of course subject to taste. But never ever ever ever use a BG for digital.

Thanks nikongod, I will have have to reconsider my choice with the caps. I assume the resistor change to film based would be a good thing?

Did you get anywhere with the additional upgrades, IvanRocks321? I have the 1000 and did the ASE upgrades to it a few months back and am also wondering what other mods are possible. Keep us posted if the project is still moving forward.

Have not had the time to do so but perhaps in a few more months, although I did end up going for the full ASE mod over the partal one.
