can you machine-wash a shuffle?

apparently yes. Washed & tumble dried mine in a sweatshirt pocket, along with some sony mdr-ex71 'phones & they still work fine. Tempted to say the sound is now cleaner but that would be too corny ...

I had the same rig as you..
It would appear my mum's technique is different though as mine didn't work

You can't do that many times, but if, by accident, it ends up in the washing machine, you just need to be sure you won't turn it on until it's completely dry.
My usb pen has gone many times to the washing machine and after a few minutes in a hair dryer, it's good to go.

But I warn you, don't do that too often

maybe the tumble drier helped here after all - dried it out nicely!

I remember a Maximum PC article a year or so back that dropped several USB key brands off a balcony, ran over them with a truck, and ran them through a wash-dry cycle. Surprisingly, it was the 'dry' part that killed all of them. After manually drying out the washed keys, all of them worked.
